An incredible opportunity to realise and construct a rare Hammer Beam frame
A truly amazing project to have been involved in, designed and built by Norton Timber
In October 2012 Norton Timber were commissioned to design and build an oak framed extension to the historic Dane Chantry near Canterbury Kent, the frame was designed and installed to the client delight without any issues, with the new frame fitting seamlessly in and around the existing house.
However… whilst this project was underway another project was mentioned that the client was keen to construct. This would be a building to house a new swimming pool, gym, sauna, hot tub along with an entertainment area. This project was in the very early stages of planning but was something that was very likely to be built.
THE BRIEF
Towards the end of 2015 Norton Timber was asked to return to Dane Chantry to discuss the oak framed building that was to sit over a new swimming pool which was being built adjacent to their house. The brief was it had to be 10mtr in wide with no internal support posts, this would push traditional Oak framing to its limits.
We investigated various design options; it was agreed that a double hammer truss frame would fulfil all the practical and engineering aspects of the structure along with giving an absolutely stunning experience for anyone entering the completed building.
Because of the rarity of this frame design and the very limited opportunity to really stretch the boundaries of what is possible in traditional oak framing. Norton Timber are both proud and honoured to have been involved in such a special project. We have put together a case study video showing the completed project. Enjoy.
